Taking advantage of an existing flat roof adjacent to the existing neonatal intensive care unit a pavilion and terrace were constructed. There are a number of seating arrangements provided both within the pavilion and outside, creating spaces where families with babies in the NICU can relax in a non-clinal setting.

The pavilion is a glass box connected to the existing brick veneer building with a connecting corridor clad in metal panels. The pavilion has a cantilevered sunshade that connects back to the steel structure. The interior finishes offer contrast to the cool enclosure and ties into the wood slats of the enclosing structure of the terrace - with a wood ceiling, and the ceramic flooring complements the terrace pavers colors and pattern. The new planting will flourish with assistance from integral irrigation system.

Project was partly funded by parents of a past NICU patient, Estelle Bam, who at the time of this project was the smallest surviving baby ever born in the unit.
